Singapore, 14 December 2018 – Gear up early to welcome the Year of the Pig as the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) presents CNY Family Fun 2019辞旧迎新合家FUN》with a slew of exciting programmes for families to prepare for the upcoming festive season. Held over 12 & 13 January 2019, one can uncover the traditions and practices behind the Spring Festival, usher in the new year with their very own terrarium and yarn art display or collect a limited-edition red packet designed by local illustrator Ah Guo with an original song by composer-pianist Peng Chi Sheng, specially commissioned by SCCC for the season.

Mr Low Sze Wee, Chief Executive Officer of SCCC said, “A key value in Chinese culture is the importance of families. As Chinese New Year is a time for reunions, we have put together activities for families to enjoy. As a special gift to the public, we have commissioned an original artwork and song for our red packet, making it SCCC’s first ‘singing red packet’. Visitors to our CNY Family Fun 2019 will be the first in Singapore to get their hands on these limited-edition collectibles.”

Fun-filled weekend for families
Families can spruce up their homes for the new year by giving old objects a new lease of life at an upcycling workshop or learn how to make a healthy CNY bento meal amidst all the festive feasting. Getting the young ones acquainted with our Chinese culture, one can participate in a CNY traditions and customs workshop, learn how to play a CNY tune on an ocarina, or even pick up lion dance to impress your CNY guests. Those seeking good fortune for the new year can also embark on a mass hunt for the real God of Fortune (Cai Shen Ye) among imposters and return his golden tael.

A musical and cultural showcase also awaits visitors as local wind percussion ensemble Reverberance presents Blast’ 19 CNY Concert, a ticketed event at the SCCC Far East Organization Auditorium. Visitors can look forward to be serenaded by guzheng and pipa performances and be entertained by Singapore local comedian host, Miss Mole, Ho Ai Ling at the SCCC SCCCI Multi-Purpose Hall foyer. Other fringe programmes include lion dance performances, a Hokkien opera demonstration, and a fengshui and zodiac talk.

Rounding up the festivities is a limited-edition red packet designed by local illustrator Ah Guo, paired with a catchy tune titled The Lo Hei Song《捞鱼生》, composed by composer-pianist Peng Chi Sheng. This is SCCC’s first “singing red packet”, and pays tribute to our Singapore Chinese culture by featuring popular local New Year dish yusheng. Visitors can get their red packets either by collecting stamps when they participate in activities at the event, or take part in SCCC’s online contests on its Facebook and Instagram pages.

Those interested to see more of Ah Guo’s colourful illustrations can visit an exhibition by Ah Guo at the SCCC Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple Gallery from 12 January – 7 February 2019, or join in a storytelling workshop by the artist at the Gallery on 13 January. Families interested in singing their own version of The Lohei Song can also attend a lyrics writing and music recording workshop by Peng Chi Sheng at the SCCC Zhong Sheng Jian Recital Studio on 13 January.

SCCC’s CNY Family Fun 2019 will take place on 12 and 13 January 2019 (Saturday & Sunday) from 10am to 8pm. For more information, please visit https://www.singaporeccc.org.sg/.
