Wan Boo Sow Lecture 2021: Building a Plural Sinophone Community: The Role of Rediffusion in Multilingual Singapore During the 1950s-1970s

Wan Boo Sow Lecture 2021

Launched in Singapore in 1949, Rediffusion, the cable radio service rose to popularity among the local communities because of its economical service and diverse ethnic programmes. In addition to channels in English, Malay and Tamil, its Chinese channel includes not just Mandarin programmes but also programmes in various Sinitic dialects such as Hokkien, Cantonese, and Teochew. This lecture examines the role Rediffusion played between 1950s and 1970s in promoting a pluralistic Sinophone community in Singapore by working closely with the various clan associations organised around Sinitic dialect affiliations.
