Before Netflix and YouTube, there was street opera. For close to 200 years, the different dialect groups in Singapore were entertained and educated by stories of heroes and villains depicted in Chinese opera.
This exhibition looks at the development of Chinese opera in Singapore, and highlights how one of the genres – Teochew opera – has adapted to the local landscape.
This is a joint presentation by the National Arts Council and the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, with the support of Nam Hwa Opera.
