The Nurturer: Xie Ke’s Novels and his Newspaper Literary Supplements

This talk focuses on Xie Ke’s (Seah Khok Chua, 1931- ) role as a novelist and his role of an editor of newspaper literary supplements, which involves the introduction of new literary ideas and the nurturing of new writers. One area of discussion is Xie’s novel writing between 1950s and 1970s. In particular, earlier works expressing his concerns for the young, such as For the Next Generation (1954) and A View of Singapore (1959). The second area of analysis is his role of a nurturer as the editor of a newspaper literary supplement. This can be seen through his promotion of young writers in “The New Generation”, “Academy of Spring and Autumn”.

Dr Seah Cheng Ta

Research Associate, School of Humanities,

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Seah obtained his Doctor of Philosophy from The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and Master of Arts from the Nanyang Technological University. He was also previously a Visiting Scholar at UCLA, and Lee Kong Chian Research Fellow at National Library Singapore. His research interests include Malayan Chinese literature, history of Southeast Asian Chinese, and global Chinese.
