Cultural Extravaganza 2024 Commences with the Celebration of Our Local Chinese Culture

SINGAPORE, 8 May 2024 – The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) conferred the Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award to this year’s recipients at the opening of its annual festival, Cultural Extravaganza, on 8 May 2024.

The event was graced by Guest-of-Honour Ms Low Yen Ling, Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth & Trade and Industry, who commended SCCC for the efforts. 

MOS Low also presented this year’s Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award (SCCCA) to Mdm Yan Choong Lian, Founder and Artistic Director of Dance Ensemble Singapore (DES) in the Individual category; and Nine Years Theatre in the Organisation category. Mdm Yan and DES continue to push the boundaries of dance innovation while celebrating the rich tapestry of Singapore’s diverse cultural heritage. Nine Years Theatre, a major player in Singapore’s Mandarin theatre scene, is recognised for their accessible and culturally layered works, resonating with audiences from all backgrounds.

The gathering of more than 200 representatives from local Chinese arts and cultural community also enjoyed the opening show of this year’s Cultural Extravaganza (CE) The Pawned Wife, presented by Nam Hwa Opera, who was the recipient of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award (Organisation) in 2023. 

With the theme of “(Re)presenting Our SINGAPO人 Treasures”, CE 2024 presents original productions and creative reinterpretations through theatrical performances, exhibitions and concerts by our talented artists and arts groups starting today (8 May) till 30 June 2024.

Nominations for next year’s SCCCA are now open. Members of the public are invited to nominate deserving candidates for the Award from now till 30 September 2024, 5pm. The category criteria (Individual and Organisation) can be found on the SCCCA website here.
