While watercolour as a painting medium originates from the Western tradition, Singapore and Malaysia watercolour art draws inspiration from both traditional British watercolour and Chinese ink painting. While techniques were inherited from British watercolour, the incorporation of calligraphic brushwork took divergent paths – influenced by both British watercolour, Chinese calligraphy and ink painting due to the diverse backgrounds of the artists. The application and evolution of various calligraphic brushwork styles show connections to their respective origins, yet deviations from contemporary Western watercolour brushwork are evident.
