Intrigued by the ancient art of carving, creation begins not with movement, but with stillness—an intense gaze, a breath held, and a blank stone waiting. Then comes the sound: the blade meets stone with quiet resistance. Each incision releases a memory—fine dust rising like whispers of time, marking the beginning of transformation.

This collaborative, multidisciplinary dance performance by Dance Ensemble Singapore, DES Arts and Siaw Tao Chinese Seal Carving Society breathes new life into tradition. The tactile, sensory world of carving—its sounds and silences—unlocks a deep well of choreographic possibility. The quiet perseverance, the devotion to process, and the clarity of vision that bind the artisan and the dancer.

Under the artistic direction of Cai Shiji, creative direction of Goh Yan Dan, and featuring guest choreographer Nguyen Anh, this triple bill continues the ensemble’s commitment to works of local resonance and artistic collaboration. Carved motifs such as the iconic Supertree Grove and the intricate patterns of the traditional kebaya serve as sources of inspiration, bridging contemporary expression with cultural heritage.

In this work, the stage becomes the stone. The body becomes the blade, and each movement, like each cut, leaves a lasting impression. Together, artisan and choreographer carve not only into their chosen mediums—but into memory itself.
