SINGAPORE, 14 February 2026 – Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) presents its first international traditional Chinese opera collaboration, Cyrano de Bergerac: A Cantonese Opera Interpretation. A joint initiative by SCCC and National Arts Council, this production is inspired by the French classic of the same name and crafted by renowned Hong Kong opera star, Dr. Law Kar Ying.
The production was first presented at the Hong Kong Chinese Opera Festival 2024, and will be re-adapted and staged in Singapore for the first time on 18 and 19 April 2026, at SCCC Auditorium (Level 9). The production is also supported by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the Embassy of France in Singapore to celebrate the 61st anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and France, and will feature student performers from International French School (Singapore) in the cast and backup choir.
The production’s captivating tale of love and friendship is based on the classic French story of Cyrano de Bergerac, which features a charming but self-conscious poet who pens passionate letters to the woman he loves in the name of his handsome but tongue-tied sworn brother. Set in ancient China, this innovative Cantonese opera adaptation brings to life the timeless themes of love, friendship, and selflessness to life through poetry, stirring music, and traditional Chinese opera stagecraft.
Featuring Dr. Law as the dedicated hero, Zhu Bufan (Cyrano in the original play) and Singapore’s Winsome Chan as the lovely Princess Xu Qishan (Roxane in the original play), this production also showcases talented artists from local Cantonese opera troupe OperaWorks (Singapore) and Dr. Law’s troupe from Hong Kong, Tai Kwan Ying Opera Troupe.
SCCC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alvin Tan, said: “Through this co-production, we hope to continue to support the local Chinese opera scene by showcasing our local opera talents and facilitating the exchange of expertise between the two troupes. More importantly, we hope to attract and grow the pool of Chinese opera lovers, and because of its source material, to reach out to new audiences such as the French community in Singapore.”
Mr Low Eng Teong, Chief Executive Officer of NAC, said: “NAC is proud to partner with SCCC to create accessible and inclusive arts experiences for everyone, while keeping the vibrant tradition of Chinese Opera alive and evolving in Singapore. This year is especially meaningful as our local artists in OperaWorks will be working with Master Law from Hong Kong and students from International French School (Singapore) to celebrate 61 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and France through “Cyrano de Bergerac. A Cantonese Opera Interpretation”. It is a wonderful reminder that while cultures are unique, the arts speak a universal language. We invite everyone to come together and see how these stories enrich our lives.”
Dr. Law, lead artist, mentioned: “I have known Chee Kin Foon, the founder of OperaWorks (Singapore) since 1968, and we have collaborated on stage many times. This time, performing with her daughter, Winsome Chan, represents two generations working together. Winsome has a solid foundation, and is eager to learn, so I have confidence in her for this performance. Transforming Cyrano into Cantonese opera lets poetry carry the heart’s deepest truths. I hope audiences feel the tenderness behind every line.”
Ms Winsome Chan, lead actress, also added: “Since childhood, I have regarded Dr Law and my mother’s performances as role models. Being able to collaborate on the same stage with him this time is an extremely precious experience. Facing a brand new script and working with Dr. Law’s team required even greater cooperation and coordination both on and off the stage. This collaboration gave me a unique experience. I am grateful to SCCC for providing such a rare opportunity.”
