Echoes of the Forbidden Hill

A Dance Drama Bridging 13th Century Temasek and Modern Singapore

Echoes of the Forbidden Hill is a dance drama that journeys across centuries, transporting audiences from present-day archaeological excavations to the thriving 13th century port settlement of Temasek.

Set against the enigmatic backdrop of Fort Canning Hill – once known as the Forbidden Hill – the production unfolds through the eyes of modern archaeologists who are mysteriously drawn back in time. Beneath the earth they study lies a forgotten world: a bustling maritime hub sustained by the sacred spring known as “Pancur”. This life-giving source of fresh water nourished passing ships, supported trade, and anchored Temasek’s emergence as a vital trading settlement in the region.

Through evocative choreography and immersive staging, the dance drama reveals how water shaped destiny. The Forbidden Spring becomes both a literal and symbolic lifeline – sustaining sailors, merchants, and settlers whose exchanges brought Chinese ceramics, goldware, and cultural richness to the island. Archaeological discoveries mirror historical memory, uncovering evidence of a prosperous settlement that laid the foundations of what would become the Lion City.

The production interweaves past and present, myth and material evidence, mystery and revelation. As the archaeologists unearth fragments of porcelain and precious artifacts, they also uncover stories—of ambition, exchange, reverence, and survival. The once-forbidden hill emerges not as a place of silence, but as a witness to the island’s vibrant beginnings.

With water as its central motif, Echoes of the Forbidden Hill reflects on continuity: from the ancient spring of Temasek to modern Singapore’s enduring relationship with water as a source of resilience, innovation, and identity.
