Chinese communities in Singapore and Southeast Asia have experienced both preservation and continuity from traditional China, as well as transformation and modernisation. This lecture focuses on Chinese clan associations, philanthropic endeavours, and family businesses to explore the origins and evolution of Chinese heritage in Nanyang Chinese society. By examining these aspects, the lecture aims to uncover the organic development of civil society, highlighting its resilience and vitality, while also drawing insights into the differing experiences of China and Singapore.

Prof Long Denggao is a Chair Professor of Economics at the School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University China, and Chair of the Center for Chinese Entrepreneur Studies at Tsinghua University China. He also serves as the Director of Tsinghua Center for Chinese Economic History. He is a Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, a title awarded by the Ministry of Education in China, and a recipient of the Sun Yefang Economic Science Award. Additionally, he is a Visiting Professor of Tan Chin Tuan Foundation at NTU and a member of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Heritage Centre NTU. Professor Long’s research focuses on economic history, institutional economics, and international Chinese business.
