HOP-SCOTCH LIKE THE IMMORTALS is a creative movement workshop inspired by the ancient shamanistic dance of the 8 Immortals (tiao ba xian 跳八仙). This ritualistic performance is part of the nuo dance (傩舞), a mask dance performed during special festivals at shrines and temples which spans over two thousand years.
The ancient shaman dancers appeared in mysterious masks and colorful costumes. Often comprising simple gestures and movements that mirrored the daily life actions of the farmers and peasants.
The workshop provides the rustic cultural context of yore and turns the dynamics of ancient grassroots living into a boisterous and fun movement session for the urban people of today.
No prior movement experience or dance background from participants is required. Mature participants simply come with open minds and enjoy a vigorous physical as well as engaging movement experience.
The one-hour workshop starts with a 15-min movement warm up. It then dives into different footwork along a hop-scotch floor pattern. The session is conducted in both Mandarin and English by professional dancers. Participants should come with loose comfortable clothing.
