Singapore’s television service was launched in 1963, the same year the country’s first Chinese drama, The Imposters: A Chinese Comedy, premiered, marking the birth of Singapore Chinese drama. Over the next two decades, the industry evolved from modest black-and-white productions into colour serials while nurturing a new generation of local scriptwriters, directors and actors. This talk revisits the formative years of Singapore Chinese drama from 1963 to 1982 through landmark productions, exploring how these pioneering dramas reflected Singapore’s changing society and laid the foundations of the local television industry.
