Encounter Under the Stars is a seven-part, half-hour Tuesday Report documentary series that traces the evolution of Singapore’s distinctive xinyao music movement – a heartfelt expression of youth, identity, and belonging since the 1980s. This continues Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre’s previous collaboration with Mediacorp’s Tuesday Report on pioneer singers in 2024 to spotlight the milestones and development of Singapore’s Mandarin music scene.
The new series features in-depth interviews with seminal figures such as Liang Wern Fook, Eric Moo, and Billy Koh, alongside voices of lesser-known yet pivotal contributors, painting a rich and layered portrait of a generation that found its voice through song.
Blending archival footage with intimate interviews and iconic melodies, each episode explores themes of youth, dreams, kinship, love, longing, and home – all through the lens of xinyao.
With a gentle and nostalgic tone, Encounter Under the Stars invites viewers on a lyrical journey through time, rediscovering a Singapore where music was more than sound – it was a way of growing up.
