SINGAPORE, 31 May 2024 – The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) is thrilled to launch its first showcase of art collections from local schools – Treasures of Our Schools: From Cheong Soo Pieng to Lim Tze Peng. This distinctive exhibition includes treasures and rarely-seen art pieces from Catholic High School, Chung Cheng High School, Dunman High School, Hwa Chong Institution, and Nanyang Girls’ High School.

Minister of State for Education and Manpower, Ms Gan Siow Huang graced the launch event at SCCC this morning (31 May). Student docents from the participating schools brought Ms Gan and guests through the varied art styles of selected exhibited works.

SCCC Chief Executive Officer Low Sze Wee said, “This exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions organised by SCCC to highlight lesser-known art collections in Singapore, particularly those containing works by Chinese Singaporean artists. In 2022, SCCC showcased the art collections of local Chinese clans. In 2023, SCCC featured the collection of the local Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao. SCCC hopes to use this exhibition series to recognise the efforts of these cultural advocates through their collections.”

Works by renowned artists such as Chen Wen Hsi, Liu Kang, Chen Chong Swee, Chua Ek Kay and Ho Ho Ying who were distinguished alumni and teachers from these schools, are jointly exhibited for the first time. Additionally, the exhibition will feature works gifted by prominent overseas artists such as Liu Haisu, who had previously visited these schools.

From Cheong Soo Pieng’s oil painting to Lim Tze Peng’s ink works, the exhibition provides a rare opportunity to appreciate the unique styles of these artists and the evolution of Singapore art from the 1950s to the present day. The exhibited works comprise oil paintings, ink paintings, and calligraphy, showcasing a beautifully diverse range of art styles.

Treasures of Our Schools: From Cheong Soo Pieng to Lim Tze Peng is part of this year’s Cultural Extravaganza. The exhibition will be held at SCCC Multi-Purpose Hall, Level 7 from now till 30 June 2024,10am to 8pm. Admission is free.
