Uncover a fresh side of our Chinese Singaporean culture at RE•MIX 2k21! From 15 to 24 January 2021, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre’s annual festival for youths returns for its first ever hybrid edition over two weekends, with exhibitions, fashion show, silent music parties, escape games and performances in both onsite and online formats.

Mr Low Sze Wee, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre said, “RE•MIX 2k21 is a platform for youths to reimagine our culture from new perspectives. The concept was popular with the youths in our first edition held in 2020, which attracted more than 10,000 participants. In light of the increasing use of digital platforms, we will be offering hybrid options at RE•MIX 2k21 – onsite shared experiences for youths to enjoy with their friends, and online activities for those who prefer to get close to our culture in the comfort of their homes. We look forward to kickstarting the new year on a fun note with our participants and discover how Chinese Singaporean culture are reflected in popular contemporary expressions such as street dance, fashion, music and games.”

Experience Chinese culture anew

RE•MIX 2k21 invites everyone to discover how Chinese culture can be found in aspects of our daily lives – from the values we cherish, clothes we wear to the games we play. Enrich your weekend by getting your ‘gram game on at our interactive exhibition All Walks of Love, which explores how love plays a part in Chinese Singaporean culture from cradle into adulthood. Spread the love on your Instagram feed, and snap your way through romantic backdrops and cultural icons that will bring back fond memories, such as large red eggs for baby’s full moon celebration and life-sized see-saw that signify the friendship forged in childhood.

Following which, feast your eyes on the fashion pieces from our first ever RE•MIX 2k21: Fashion Design Competition, where young Singaporeans aged 15 to 25 drew inspiration from our cultural identity to create innovative fashion pieces. If you are unable to head down to the centre, fret not as there will also be a livestream showcase of the designs shortlisted by celebrity stylist and fashion designer Keith Png, alongside celebrity Kate Pang and SCCC CEO Low Sze Wee.

For those with a knack for solving puzzles, channel your inner Sherlock Holmes and take a crack at Pan!c at the Gallery – The RE•MIX Escape Game with your friends. Available in both online and offline formats, the experience takes participants to the SINGAPOpermanent exhibition, where they will be tasked with stopping a nefarious plot through mind-boggling puzzles.

Where pop and Chinese culture meet

Hop on a musical escapade with a special upsized edition of the popular live-stream concert series TGIF Music Station: SCCC X YES 933. Taking the stage are popular artistes such as AL4HA, Joel Choo, Fang Rong, Ferlyn G, Fingerfunk, JJ Neo, The Fleurist, The Cold Cut Duo, BPM and Qiu Feng Ze x Cai Zi. Continue the music celebration by dancing the night away at RE•MIX Silent Music Party, featuring two themed experiences that take participants on a journey across time to rediscover familiar tunes, or uncover their Singapo(ren) soul through a Music Personality Quiz based on their song choices. Music lovers can also join in an online version of the programme, where participants stream curated playlists and share their best music memories with one another.

Dance enthusiasts are in for a treat with RE•MIX the Dance Livestream. Watch Singapore’s young talents face off in a battle of Mandarin tunes, and look forward to sessions by local Chinese dance artist Jenny Neo and YES 933 DJ Hazelle Teo, who will share insights on how dance has helped them to navigate the arts and entertainment industry. Whether you’re an aspiring or seasoned dancer looking to broaden your horizons, join our RE•MIX the Dance Workshop – Street Dance VS Chinese Dance for tips on how Chinese moves and music can be used in modern dance styles.

On the second weekend, get ready to laugh out loud with your favourite SGAG crew including Pam, Nadia, Brightman, Xiaoming and Maddy. SGAG Night ‘Live’ @ RE•MIX brings together these entertaining personalities as they compete against each other in an online series of high-stakes games that will test their knowledge of our distinctive Chinese Singaporean culture.

Hands-on cultural experiences

Other programmes to look forward to include arts and crafts workshops such as Chop! Chop! Rubber Stamp Carving Online Workshop, where participants can learn about the art of rubber stamp carving from local carver Baisimu; an introduction to fashion sketching at Fashion Design Illustration Online Workshop helmed by illustrator Mandy Lau; as well as The Art of Cute Doodling Online Workshop, an opportunity to pick up the secret of drawing adorable doodles from illustrator and art educator Leach. These workshops will allow participants to express their creativity while weaving in elements of our Chinese culture such as our favourite curry puff and ang ku kueh, into the artworks.

RE•MIX 2k21 will take place online and at the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre from 15 to 24 January 2020. Selected programmes will be ticketed, with an option for an all-access RE•MIX 2k21 Festival Pass. For more information, please visit https://remix.singaporeccc.org.sg.
