In today’s multilingual world, the principle of equal access to public services brings translation and interpreting as key strategies for communication between individuals and authorities to the fore. In other words, societies need a translation policy as part of their language policy. This lecture defines translation policy with regards to the relevant scholarly literature on language policy. It discusses different prototypical translation policies and their real-world application in a representative selection of contemporary settings worldwide. It also analyses the links between these policies and linguistic justice, social cohesion, integration, and non-discrimination.
