Teochew pottery has been part of Southeast Asian trade since the 19th century, with Teochew migrants playing a key role in shaping regional pottery production and commerce. Singapore became a focal point for this development, where Teochew pottery businesses grew from early maritime trade and the export of pottery to the establishment of dragon kilns in areas such as Tekong Island, Pulau Ubin, Hougang, and Jurong. Case studies of Sam Mui Kuang, Thow Kwang, and Guan Huat dragon kilns illustrate how Teochew entrepreneurs adapted to urban redevelopment by transitioning from mass production to pottery arts, import trade, and cultural preservation, demonstrating the resilience and continuity of heritage amid industrial change.
