Are you vegan, vegetarian or flexitarian? The desire to adopt a plant-based diet is gaining traction in Singapore today. Step into a hawker centre, coffeeshop or shopping mall, and you would find at least one vegetarian food stall or eatery. Yet little is known about how vegetarian cuisines became part of Singapore’s culinary landscape.
In reality, Chinese vegetarian restaurants are quite a recent occurrence. They date back to the 1940s, and a significant number were opened by Chinese Buddhist women.
Join Kelvin Tan as he explores the development and social memory of Chinese vegetarian food culture in Singapore, its relationship to migration, women and religion, and how vegetarianism is associated with causes of philanthropy and healthy ageing.
