Mei Yu Pei is a rediscovered classic of Beijing opera from the late Qing dynasty, once performed by legendary artists like Mei Qiaoling and Mei Lanfang, and revived in 2014 after decades of obscurity. Set to premiere in Singapore in 2025, the story follows Su Yulian, whose arranged marriage to a morally corrupt suitor is quietly opposed by her sister-in-law, Han Cuizhu. When Yulian loses her handkerchief at a temple, it is found by scholar Xu Tingmei, who falls in love. With the help of Granny Huang and Cuizhu, the couple escape societal constraints through a clever ruse, and after Xu excels in the imperial exams, the lovers are joyfully reunited and ultimately accepted by their families.
