The Peacocks Flying Southeast is a classic opera hailed as the “Romeo and Juliet” of Chinese opera, adapted from the Han Dynasty poem 《古诗为焦仲卿妻作》. It tells the poignant tale of Liu Lanzhi and Jiao Zhongqing, whose genuine love is destroyed by feudal pressures and family control. Forced apart by Zhongqing’s domineering mother and Lanzhi’s coercive brother, the lovers are driven to a tragic double suicide, making their story a powerful symbol of defiance against oppressive traditions and the yearning for freedom in love.
