This talk is the English and expanded edition of the talk on Singapore art history of the same title. Coming under the “Chinese Communities & Organisations in Southeast Asia” series organised by the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre and Nanyang Technological University Chinese Heritage Centre, the talk takes “organisations” to mean discursive frames with linguistic characteristics. While visual arts always exist in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual arena, art research and criticism are paradoxically more language dependent. The Two Nanyang Styles in Singapore art history in conjunction with their timeframes and contexts, down to the very definition of “style,” offer insights into thinking about Singapore cultures.
