Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival with a Local Twist at Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre

Singapore, 24 August 2018 – If Mid-Autumn Festival (traditionally celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month) only reminds of mooncakes and lanterns, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) is set to surprise with its first ever Mid-Autumn Celebration @ SCCC on 15 September 2018 that will feature a host of family-friendly activities presented with a local twist.

“We are always looking to create accessible entry points to introduce our Singapore Chinese culture to a wider audience, including the younger generation. While the Mid-Autumn Festival has its long-standing practices, we have also injected local elements into the Mid-Autumn Celebration @ SCCC, enabling us to pay tribute to our heritage while ensuring our programmes resonate with the public. An exciting day of celebration all around the centre awaits visitors of different interests,” said Mr Lee Ee Wurn, Programmes Director of SCCC.

Legends and stories come alive

Many myths and legends speak of the origins of the Mid-Autumn Festival. To bring these stories alive, SCCC has curated programmes including an exciting mass escape activity around SCCC as visitors role-play as divine timekeepers to restore the trail of destruction wrought by Tieguai Li’s demigod son. They can also learn about the antics of Houyi, Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit through a rod puppetry show by Paper Monkey Theatre at the Recital Studio.

Adding a scientific touch to culture

Inspired by the tradition of moon gazing in the evening of Mid-Autumn Festival, SCCC will partner Science Centre Singapore to present an experiential Starry Night Planetarium Show and an astronomy exhibition at its Multi-Purpose Hall. Visitors will learn about the solar systems, the moon, and how the ancients locate their positions and distinguish the seasons just by looking at the stars. They can even play around with light diffusion as part of a LED lantern making workshop.

Traditions presented anew

Staying true to the tradition of staging Chinese operas and music performances in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, SCCC has partnered with Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI) to present a sharing session by Mdm Li Qiu Ping, the master teacher of ITI and Shanghai Theatre Academy, on unique features of different Chinese opera genres. Thereafter, visitors are welcomed to enjoy Tales of Houyi that will be staged in Teochew with Mandarin and English narratives by Teochew opera company Tok Tok Chiang.

Entertainment galore at the Celebration

Other exciting activities throughout the day include enchanting performances of music compositions such as Teresa Teng Medley by Chamber Kakis (previously known as Ding Yi Youth Ensemble) at the Auditorium, as well as a student-guided heritage trail of Singapore’s Central Business District by students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic and ITE West. With a lantern on hand under the glow of the moon, visitors will be able to discover the Golden Shoe area and discover the history of Singapore’s “Wall Street”.

Mr Low Sze Wee, Chief Executive Officer of SCCC said, “Mid-autumn Festival is traditionally an occasion for family reunions. Similarly, we see the Mid-Autumn Celebration @ SCCC as a gathering of like-minded partners to promote our Singapore Chinese culture and revel in good spirits together. We’d like to express our appreciation to the many partners who are part of our inaugural celebration of this Festival.”
