Singapore, 16 January 2017 – The Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) and Singapore Press Holdings’ (SPH) Chinese Media Group (CMG) have entered into a partnership to develop and boost the Chinese cultural scene in Singapore.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Mr Choo Thiam Siew, CEO of SCCC and Ms Lee Huay Leng, Head of Chinese Media Group, SPH today. The signing was witnessed by Mr Chua Thian Poh, Chairman of SCCC and Mr Anthony Tan, Deputy CEO of SPH.

The partnership will enable Lianhe Zaobao, the Chinese flagship newspaper of SPH, to organise a series of cultural activities at SCCC under the banner of Zaobao Cultural and Creative Space (早报文创空间).  Both parties will make the best use of their respective resources to increase public awareness and participation of these cultural activities at SCCC. Lianhe Zaobao will plan, organise and publicise the activities while SCCC will provide the venue and on-site arrangements for the events.

At least 12 events will be organised every year as part of Zaobao Cultural and Creative Space. The activities include Talks On Lifestyle And Aesthetics (生活美学讲堂) about promoting quality of living through cultural appreciation, Creators’ Laboratory (创客实验室) showcases Singapore’s unique cultural designs and creativity, Up-Close with the Masters (与大师面对面) offers opportunities for interaction with masters in the cultural and creative fields, zbNow Tea Sessions (《四方八面》茶叙) enable face-to-face exchanges between Lianhe Zaobao columnists and members of the public, Culture Salon (文艺沙龙) invites writers, film makers and musicians to share their experiences, Fringe Sharing (非主流分享) provides a performance platform for niche musicians and underground bands, Reading Club (读书会) brings together literature lovers to read and share about books, and other events.

Kicking off the series of events will be the first session of Creators’ Laboratory on 25 February.

Ms Lee Huay Leng, Head of CMG, SPH, said: “We look forward to the launch of Zaobao Cultural and Creative Space where a conducive environment and appealing atmosphere will be developed for our readers to experience top-notch cultural events. SCCC is an ideal venue for CMG to add greater vibrancy to the Chinese cultural scene in Singapore.”

Mr Choo Thiam Siew, CEO of SCCC, said: “Being an active promoter of local culture, SCCC strongly supports the cultural and creative industries to enhance the development and innovations in local Chinese culture. This collaboration with SPH CMG is a step forward in SCCC’s work, and we will progressively establish strategic partnerships with other organisations and groups for the promotion and development of Chinese culture at various levels.”
