Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre’s Cultural Extravaganza Returns This Year, highlights how culture is presented across generations

Singapore, 12 April 2023 – Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre’s (SCCC) signature festival Cultural Extravaganza, returns for its sixth edition with 11 exciting programmes that are cross-cultural, cross-disciplinary and cross-generational.

Taking place from 12 May to 18 June 2023, the programmes highlight the passing on of our culture to the next generation (传承, as reflected in the tagline “(Re)presenting culture across generations”.)

Across Time and Generations

From theatre productions, music performances, to TV programmes, Cultural Extravaganza 2023 aims to showcase how our culture has evolved over time.

One such cross-generational programme is Intimate Intricacies produced by Ding Yi Music Company. It comprises newly commissioned Chinese chamber music inspired by disappearing trades such as giant joss stick-making and embroidery.

Collaborative Efforts Across Artistic Mediums

What’s more, attendees can expect to be wowed by unique collaborations between different artistic disciplines and mediums.

Stride Beyond the Banks by Dance Ensemble Singapore is an original dance-drama inspired by the story of Dance Ensemble Singapore’s 30 years of development and the “Singapore River: The Big Clean Up” initiative.

SCCC arts tenant Nam Hwa Opera will present two new shows with different concepts. Who Says It First  is a refreshing modern Mandopop musical with Teochew opera elements.  One Opera Singapore is a showcase that brings different dialect opera groups together on stage.

Various Cultures Woven into a Single Festival

Cultural Extravaganza 2023 presents a selection of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural performances that encapsulates life in Singapore.

The opening show by RuanAtWorkz, Present Past, features characters from different periods and awakens them in this inter-dimensional space. This multi-ethnic performance explores values from the past, the present and finds the meaning of the future through self-discovery.

Additionally, attendees can look forward to other thrilling offerings by Jazz Association (Singapore), Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra, Lianhe Zaobao, Mediacorp, and more.

Another innovation is the AI-generated cross-cultural character for Cultural Extravaganza 2023. It is symbolic of SCCC embracing new technology while maintaining connections with  the past.

SCCC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Low Sze Wee said, “Cultural Extravaganza 2023 will spotlight innovative programmes by our local arts groups, inspired by our multi-cultural society. It is a significant year for several of our arts partners this year as they celebrate their anniversaries. SCCC is delighted to work with them to put together a line-up that conveys how our traditions and cultures are passed down from one generation to the next.”

Cultural Extravaganza 2023 offers both free and ticketed events. For ticketed programmes, ticket sales will start on 12 April 2023 via SISTIC.

PAssion Card, NTUC, Safra, HomeTeamNS and meRewards members get to enjoy a 20% discount on their tickets.
