Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award returns to recognise champions of our unique Singapore Chinese culture

Singapore, 1 November 2017 – The Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award (SCCCA) returns for a second year to recognise cultural champions across sectors, who have made significant contributions to the Singapore Chinese cultural landscape.

Conferred by the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) for outstanding efforts in the promotion, enrichment, propagation and development of Singapore Chinese culture, two award recipients – one each for the individual and organisation categories – will be presented with a prize of S$20,000 each, comprising S$10,000 in cash, and up to S$10,000 in project funding.

Dr Liu Thai Ker, Chairman of the SCCCA Judging Committee for the second year running said, “In the process of assessing the outstanding efforts of individuals and organisations to promote our unique Singapore Chinese culture, it has been heartening to see that Chinese cultural activities are very much alive in our society. This is reflected through the ever-increasing number of participants and audiences, the wide variety of arts and cultural forms, as well as the breadth of cultural expressions ranging from the traditional to the contemporary.”

Dr Liu added, “Many of the works we have seen are both distinctly Chinese, and yet carry a noticeable South East Asian flavour. This contributes towards the rich cultural heritage of our multi-cultural society in Singapore which embraces the Malay, Indian and Western culture. Through this experience, I have become more optimistic about the future of Chinese culture development in Singapore. I sincerely hope that more Singaporeans would be proud of the achievements of these artists and render stronger support for them to carry on their noble mission to develop our Singapore Chinese culture.”

Besides Dr Liu Thai Ker, the judging committee comprises Professor Eddie Kuo Chen Yu, Professor Kwok Kian Woon, Mr Lim Jim Koon, Mr Leslie Fong Yin Leong, Mr Hee Theng Fong and Ms Woo Mun Ngan. Together, they will assess the nominations based on the selection criteria.

The inaugural award was given out in May this year. Mr Han Lao Da, crosstalk pioneer, Mandarin playwright, and theatre director, received the award for the individual category, for his untiring dedication in the promotion of crosstalk in Singapore over the past four decades. For the organisation category, Siong Leng Musical Association was recognised for their efforts to reinvent and rejuvenate Nanyin and Liyuan Opera in Singapore since 1941.

The SCCCA is open to nominations of all Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents, and non-commercial organisations from now till 31 January 2018. Interested individuals and organisations are required to complete and submit the nomination form to the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre.
