Speech by Mr Low Sze Wee, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre at the “My Singapore Style” Micro Film Competition Award Ceremony

Our Guest-of-Honour Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Ms Grace Fu;
Chairman of Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre and Honorary President of Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations Mr Chua Thian Poh,
President of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations Mr Tan Aik Hock,
Editor of LianheZaobao and LianheWanbao Mr Goh Sin Teck,
Judges of the “My Singapore Style” Micro Film Competition,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening!

I am delighted to be here with you to witness the Award Ceremony of this Competition.

This third edition follows two successful runs, which were based on the themes of “My Singapore Story” and “My Singapore Future” respectively. This year, the theme “My Singapore Style” was chosen because we wanted to include a wider range of subjects and bring new insights to what embodies Singapore.
Many might have the impression that culture refers only to the arts, but it includes various aspects of our daily lives. Our culture is the way we speak, the food we eat, the customs we practise, and the physical environment around us. In this light, the Cultural Centre is happy to partner with the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations and LianheZaobao in this Micro Film Competition. In the entries received this year, many have shared their personal stories, memories and experiences related to Singapore.

We are interested to present Singapore Chinese culture in accessible ways to the public. The Micro Film Competition is a good way to encourage the public to observe their surroundings and share their perspectives on what is “Singapore Style”. As these are short films, the format is easy for us to watch and enjoy, as long as we have a few minutes to spare.

Singapore has produced several outstanding filmmakers who have received recognition beyond our shores. They include Royston Tan, whom the Cultural Centre had commissioned to produce a film anthology. Titled “667”, it is a collection of five short films directed by young Singapore filmmakers Kirsten Tan, He Shuming, Liao Jiekai, Eva Tang and Jun Chong – whose short film won the “Best Asian Short” at the 13th Sapporo International Short Film Festival in 2018. Through this Micro Film Competition, we hope to inspire Singaporeans to try their hands at film-making, and perhaps be the next Royston Tan of their generation.

I will now say a few words in Mandarin.
