Singapore, 13 February 2018 – Mr Low Sze Wee has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) of the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (“SCCC”) with effect from 1st April 2018. He is currently Director (Curatorial, Collections and Education) at the National Gallery Singapore (“Gallery”), and will be seconded from the Gallery to the SCCC.
Mr Low’s extensive experience in the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), the former Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, and the Gallery spanned a range of functions, from policy development and strategic planning to programme development and delivery. At SAM, he participated in the development of the new wing 8Q-SAM, and also oversaw a landmark donation of paintings by eminent artist Wu Guanzhong, the single largest art donation to Singapore. At the Gallery, Mr Low was a key contributor to the conceptualisation and development of the $530m restoration project. Mr Low has been involved in many exhibitions abroad and in Singapore, including important retrospectives on Singapore artists, Venice Biennale (2003) and collaborative projects in China, Japan and Korea. He has been regularly invited to give lectures on Singapore and Southeast Asian art, and has presented at numerous international platforms in the United Kingdom, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia.
As CEO of SCCC, Mr Low will be responsible for developing programmes and initiatives to further SCCC’s mission, promoting SCCC’s profile, and overseeing the management of SCCC’s operations. The SCCC was officially opened on 19 May 2017, by the Prime Minister and SCCC Patron Mr Lee Hsien Loong. The first CEO of SCCC, Mr Choo Thiam Siew, retired on 31 May 2017, and deputy CEO, Mr Shaun Phua, has been covering the duties of the CEO in the interim.

Mr Low shared that “My time at the Gallery has been truly memorable. Working with a great team to set up a new national institution to promote greater art appreciation in Singapore was deeply satisfying. Similarly, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre has the task of deepening our collective understanding and appreciation of the distinctiveness of Singapore Chinese culture, and how it continues to evolve within our multi-cultural society. The Centre is at the start of this meaningful journey, and I look forward to working with the Chairman and the Board to realise this vision together.”
